"Museum of Idiots" - TMBG. |
] |
That's what I keep saying, over and over. That was SO beautiful. There is no other way to describe it... eeii... I may leave out a lot due to my tired yet estastic mood; but, let's start from the beginning.
Picked up Sylvia around 11, we went to CVS to get film and batteries and things; and then it was out on the road from there. We kept ourselves fairly amused in the car; I would squeak excitedly every once and awhile, she had her dual-headphone jack so we could listen to music together without bugging my 'rents. (Well, conceivably, except when we would accidentally start a sing along. It happens, you know? :3) She also introduced me to what seemed like a typical 12-year-old sort of game; MASH. Which we actually had a grand time with. XD Let's see.. I ended up with a very small rock for a mate.. it was coated in glue and covered in bread crumbs for our wedding; I was dressed in only leaves to cover my naughty bits.. uhh.. I ended up living in NYC, but one of my options that I didn't end up getting was Linnell's closet. Sylvia ended up living in Flansy's drawer. Not bad. :3 Stuff like that, we were being retards; it was throughly fun. XD Her pet ended up being a fruit bat.. mine was a midget. Flans-wolf was an option on mine that she added but I didn't get. One of her pet options was an albino Grandmother. Things in that vein. Ended up getting this Spidey-toy that squirts water in a happy meal when we stopped for lunch on the way there.. ecetera. *Doesn't feel like going into uber-annoying detail about every little thing for the sake of the reader not becoming bored; so they'll stick it out until the actual description of the show* When we pulled into our hotel in Michigan, the Lamp Post Inn, Sylvia was like, "I saw this car with a radio station sticker on the back of it.. I wonder if it's our peoples?" We agreed that at the very least, it was some nifty persons who might be attending the TMBG show also.. but she was utterly and creepily right. It turned out to be the folk we were intending upon meeting. (Colby/Lauren, Jon, Asa, and Vero.) They waved at us from down below when we were attempting to get into our room, and I got all excited, proclaiming, "Doood!" and unnecessary amount of times until we actually got within hearing distance of them. I've never met persons I'd known online first in real life before. It's awesome. ^_^ (Haha, CCC, you're even cuter in person than when pictured. =3 *Pokes you*) So after we'd conquered our own hotel room, we scurried down to bug them. I was still hurriedly trying to complete my new TMBG shirt before the show, though. I ending up rushing the end, but I'm pleased with the result. :3 *Was working on it the entire car ride there, too* I'll scan it in and post it on DevART in a bit. =D But anywhoo. Yus. Then, we went to dinner at an.. err.. eatery. And I was talking to much/to excited to eat much; so I only ate half my burger, and so got it put in a doggie-bag-box thing. And we were all joking about how I should have Flans sign the burger. xD I figured, hey, Drakie DID want me to get something signed for her.. she didn't specify what.. XD (However, we never actually did get the burger signed; sorry to disappoint you Drakie, heh.) Dinner was pretty fun. It was discovered that the mini plastic Klingon pain-stick from my wallet made an excellet projectile when used in concert with a drink straw. And we were playing with various toys on the dinner table.. some Pokemon, my Deanna Troi figurine, and Sylvia's Buttercup thingy off her keychain. Yes, we're mature. Duh. EVERYBODY plays with toys whilst eating, especially at and past the age of 15. (Incidentally, everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads, too. And a rock to wind a piece of string around.) The bathrooms there were cool; they had detailed fantasy murals down on the way to the bathroom. O_o Ann Arbor in general seemed pretty neat. The firehydrant ws painted. Some on had added the word "War" to the bottom of a stop sign, so it read, "Stop War." And things like that. Why isn't our town even mildly that cool? Chagrin Falls is so very, very dull. X3 But what're yeh gonna do, eh? Then, it was TMBG time. We bounced off down the sidewalk, and I was starting to get really pumped. Jon found a big toliet-paper tube type-stick, and somehow I ended up with it. It was an excellent weapon. My parents made me leave it outside before going in to see Them in concert, though.
*IMPORTANT COOL PART IS TO FOLLOW* =D
The opening band consisted of some guys who called themselves Common Rotation, and they were actually rather good. The lead singer was rather energetic, and yes, reasonably cute, too. Colby and all them were seated more to the right, in row L; was somewhere in the middle. We were seated more to the middle-left, and in row U, so the closest thing to the back aside from the balcony. It turned out, however, that none of our seating mattered in the least - for right when the Dans, the Johns, and Marty busted out onto the stage, Flans started yelling into the microphone for everyone who wanted to, to come closer. So, of course, Sylvia and I errupted from our seats and after squiggling past my parents, we found ourselves standing right behind the people who were literally leaning on the edge of the stage; not much more than a mere ten feet from the Johns. Frith up a tree; my brain lurched about in my skull, threatening to overload or break free or something - ten feet away from the Johns! Those.. those people I've been drawing all the time, those people I've watched on my TV screen through Gigantic and DFB.. those people whose voices I hear almost everyday of my life, those people I've heard interviewed on NPR; those people I've heard so much about, those people.. you get the picture. *Blush* As my first TMBG show.. it was just.. an amazing realization. Bloody hell. THEM. @___@; They're so cute, too; I loved all their quirky comments.
Flansburgh: Alright everyone.. turn your cell phones back on! That's right; get them out.. call your friend standing next to you. Tell them about the show you're at!
Linnell: This next song is from our very unusal upcoming album, the Spine.. you see.. the album actually has a spine.
Those were some of the first couple odd comments. X3 I was too excited for my mind to work particuarly well; I can't guarantee I recall everything, or in perfect detail. Anyhow.. they had this dance contest at one point during the show, when they played "The Guitar", and the prize was this.. empty Vinyl case.. from a local record store, for some weird Vietnam music, uhh.. XD *Giggles* It was "signed" too. Or rather, Linnell was telling everyone how it was signed, as he held it sideways and signed that musician's name on it (and spelled the name wrong too, I believe?) with a Sharpie he'd gotten from someone backstage. People in the audience were trying to be helpful and some people actually threw Sharpies up on the stage when he was looking for it. ^^" Anyway, only people in the very front row could officially win the dance contest; because they obviously couldn't see the whole audience, so it'd be unfair otherwise. Sylvia and I had fun with it anyway. We did some slightly-wacked spinny duo dancing or whatever, and bounced around a lot; and generally lost our heads in the face of the goodness that They were generating. XD The lady who won, Flans said did so because she had some kinda move going that reminded him of a television show he was fixated with when he was little. Lessee.. they did Spin the Dial; and it was pretty successful. 'Twas a lot of fun to see. ^^ They even ended up coming across an uber-religious, the Fish kinda song; but they played along with it, too. It was hilarious.
As for a set-list and stuff.. I didn't write down anything really, I was too excited to actually think to do that. So I dunno the order, and I'll probably end up leaving a lot out, but here are some of the songs that were played, at least:
-Twisting -Spine -Memo to Human Resources -Older -Particle Man -The Guitar -Istanbul -Ana Ng -Birdhouse -Doctor Worm -Bastard Wants to Hit Me -Some other song off The Spine that I don't know yet really, so I forget the title -Stomp Box -Why Does the Sun Shine? -Fngertips -Sleepwalkers -Robot Parade -Violin
(Some of that stuff was part of the encores; but I don't really remember all of what was what, so it's safer just to randomly list them)
And.. more I think; I've having a terribly time remembering all of them, if you couldn't tell already. o_o It was just a huge jumble of goodness. There were some just-instrumental things, too.. like this massive solo thing Dan Miller did, just with a bit of keyboards (Linnell) in the background. And when Linnell had his accordian out at one point; after a song, he just kept playing, and they had a weird jam thing going there for a bit.
Other odd/nifty things they said/did.. hmm.. well, Linnell has his shoes off almost the entire show for some reason or another; they were just sitting by his keyboard and he was in his stocking feet. That's a random detail, eh? And they made some comments about how everyone ought to go and register to vote; but not to vote drunk, and if they must vote drunk; to have your friend vote for you. And after Miller's big solo, they were like, "Yeh, so, we've handed control of They Might Be Giants over to Mr. Dan Miller.. his album is coming out this month.. John and I will still be in the band, though, of course - for security reasons and so forth." (Or something to that extent.) Heh. XD Flans walked along the edge of the stage and held out his guitar so that people could touch it, at one point. He kept bouncing very close to the edge of the stage frequently, too; so it was more like being only 4 feet from him at times. o_O" During the show, it's entertaining to try to get into staring contests with the band members.
Ahhh.. crap shite. I lost everything I’d typed up after this, because of my stupid browser. Dammit. *Stabs Internet Explorer* At least I’ve got this much, as I’d pasted it onto Word earlier on… thank god for that. Otherwise I’d just not post a review of how it was, because I’m getting kinda bitchy now. ^^” My mum keeps bugging me to go clean, and I dislike having to re-type things. It never comes out remotely right the second time. Anyway, I’ll continue on again.. I apologize if the rest of my review is less that satisfactory.
Okay.. where was I..
Oh yeh. Staring contests. Uhm, I was saying something about how, with the lighting, they could see the people in the first few rows.. I couldn’t catch anyone else’s eye, but Linnell looks around a lot, so if you stare at him long enough, he’ll notice, stare back for a bit, then narrow his eyes, give you a weird look/glare and then look away. ^^ Very cool to think [insert another description about how it’s so surreal/awesome to be obsessed with someone then seeing them in person] ..and not only could I see him, but he could see me. It’s just “whoa”. And they shot confetti and stuffs. I’ve got a piece of it under my wrist band. *Checks to see if it’s still there* Yep. [Insert other stuff here I wrote before but I’m lazy and annoyed now; which impairs my memory even futher. I’m sure other people who went to the show will provide much clearer reviews anyhow.]
After the last encore, Sylvie and I immediately sprinted out of there and mulled around, looking for our fellows and potentially Flans. When we were unsuccessful, I wasted some time by buying an Apollo-18 shirt and a Maxi-single tape. Then, we finally figured out where they were; back in the room TMBG had performed in, along with Flans. We almost didn’t get back in, we wouldn’t have if it weren’t for this particularly nice old lady who felt sorry for us, so even though se informed us she couldn’t really/wasn’t supposed to do so, she let us in anyway. If I ever see that lady again, I owe her a big, big hug. We got to speak very briefly with Flans, and I give him a blob of fanart. Sylvie said he seemed geniuely impressed; I honestly couldn’t tell though. I felt kinda sorry for the guy.. he was trying to escape, but when more people kept sneaking up to him to try to talk to him and things, he obliged; because he’s such a sweetheart like that. You could tell he was pretty stressed, though. So we didn’t get anything signed, as we didn’t want to bug him; and we figured we always had the opportunity of the Brooklyn show to do so. Colby and all them were there before us/before he was trying to leave, though, so they got stuff signed, got a picture taken with him; and Colby gave him a hug. Aw. =D He gave Sylvie a high-five when she said hello to Flans from her dad. He recognized her. It was cool. I wonder if, at the next show(s) I go too this summer; if I wear the same outfit, he’ll recognize me as the crazy person who gave him all the weird drawings? Haha, I wonder what they thought of those.. Sylvie and I were having a vaguely amusing time speculating on that. I love doing those, though. When I satisfy my bitchy mother by at least partially cleaning my room; next thing I’m going to do is come back down here and work on some promotion artwork for Team TMBG. It’s actually what I wanted to do the whole rest of the day, right after typing this up and maybe taking a pause sometime to type up an RP post too.. but ah well. She insists on having me contribute to entropy elsewhere in the universe by atttempting to organize our little corner of it, first, I guess.
*END REVIEW*
The rest of this post will just be.. brief notes on the rest of the trip. Well, we hung out in C/J/V/A’s hotel room for a bit, then went to our own room once they had all gotten into bed, and stayed up awhile discussing things – some serious, some amusing. We were becoming metal with fatigue, and started wishing random things goodnight – however, I said, “Pah, I’m only wishing people actually in existence in this room, and/or the Johns, goodnight.” (Because Sylvie was wishing some random photos of the Johns goodnight, and then she moved on to wishing a whole bunch of other random stuff goodnight too.) And this was amusing to us at the time; so then we discovered how adding “and/or the Johns” to everything was somehow inherently humourous. And we noted how it was like the fortune-cookie thing where you add “in bed” to everything in order to make it funny. So then, we started adding the whole phrase of “and/or the Johns in bed” to everything. ^^;; It was funny. Okay? “Hey Anya, you can draw Conan on my pants.. and/or the Johns in bed.” ^^;; We shared this with our buds in the morning when saying good-bye to them; and lo’ and behold Jon produced a large amount of the interiors of fortune cookies seemingly out of thin air; and we read a bunch of them like that before we had to go. Whee. And stuff. I have to go now before my mum explodes or something. 'Cha.
*EDITS* Oh yeh, I almost forgot - I got 20 pictures at the concert; I hope they come out, 'cause I had my flash off for obvious reasons. I had 7 left I was going to use to take pictures of the persons we met in order to remember them; but I was a retard and forgot to. Sylvie took at least the one of Jon and Colby when we were all at dinner, anyway. ^^ But, so now I've got to use up my film in order to get those pictures. Eei; I can't wait to see them. ^_^
