Multi Fandom Charity: fanfic fanart etc. [26 Nov 2009|01:13am]

dollhousefics

[eridanie]

This charity is to pay for eye surgery for my friend who has a genetic mutation that causes many health problems throughout her body in her connective tissues called Marfans one of the health problems this causes that negatively affects her life is her lenses moving in her eyes and causing her eyesight to be so bad that she can't see the chalkboard from the front row even with very thick glasses. She has already paid for her left eye but she lacks the funds for her right because she hasn't been working because she has been her mom's caretaker who was dying of cervical cancer, and now that her mom is dead the government took back all the money her mom had in her accounts, and she had to pay back money to financial aid for classes she dropped out of when she found out her mom was about to die. All that happened in a short period of time leaving her with no money for her remaining surgery. This charity is for a very deserving person who has sacrificed her life for her mother and now has been left with nothing. More Info Here

This is a multi fandom auction that has fanfic, fanart, podfic, icons, jewelry, tarot readings, dvd's, food, and anything else you could come up with to offer. You can offer up things, services, or writing and/or bid on things you want.

Stray, Chapter Twenty-Four: Shrovetide, pt. 1 [26 Nov 2009|01:00am]

fernwithy
Sirius, Remus, and Tonks took the Brodies halfway around the world to Recife, Brazil, where they will start a new life. (I have to admit to being insecure here--I've been looking at maps and pictures and listening to frevo music to get the setting in my head, but nothing replaces being there, and I'm sure that anyone who has been will snicker, to which I can only say, "Oh, well." Unless, of course, there are useful suggestions...)

FWIW, I'll be putting up the annual holiday challenge call on Friday, to last through the end of the month. If you've been thinking about something you want, that'll be when to ask! (But no reincarnates, please.) :D

Weird Musicals [25 Nov 2009|11:09pm]

furtech
[ mood | amused ]

Unusual Musicals

While iTuning my cd collection of musicals I’ve come across some interesting selections I’ve accumulated over the years. All of these are musicals. Here are some of the more unusual ones:

Side Show (1997): based on Daisy and Violet Hilton, the famous conjoined twins from the 1930’s. This is one of my favorite shows: the music is powerful and wrenching; it features Alice Ripley: her voice is amazing (of late she is/was in the current Broadway musical, “Next to Normal”).

A Fine and Private Place (2004): based on the Peter S. Beagle novel of the same name. I haven’t listened to this at length—it’s been decades since I read the novel and I need to re-familiarize myself with the story.

Night of the Hunter (1998): based on the film of the same name (which starred Robert Mitchum in a great performance). Have not listened to this: I need to, because I love the film. “Night of the Hunter” is one of the finest suspense films of all time: numerous elements in this film would later become clichés in cartoons (like the l-o-v-e/h-a-t-e tattooed on the knuckles of the main character).

The Great American Trailer Park Musical (2005): Low-end concept, high-end fun. A friend of mine saw this off-Broadway and loved it.

Debbie Does Dallas (2003): Another raunchy film-based musical that actually had good music in it. Surprisingly amusing!

How Now Dow Jone’s (1967): A love story in and around the stock market: dated and simplistic (a key plot point is that one character promises to marry her if the Dow Jone’s Average hits 1,000).

Nunsense (1986): A fictional fund-raiser by surviving nuns of a convent where most of their sisters died from food poisoning (and are still in the deep freezer). Particularly hilarious if you’re Catholic.

Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993): based on the film of the same name. Torture and fantasy in a South American prison. Fantastic music from the team of Kander and Ebb, who also brought you Chicago and Caberet.

Urinetown (2001): One of my top ten favorite musicals. A sharp satire about a town where water is so scarce you are taxed to pee. Funny as hell. One of the actors, in the program book, noted this amusing story: “When I told my parents what musical I got a part in, they asked, ‘Did you say, “You’re In Town”? “No, mom—it’s Urine-town, like in “pee”.”

Mff 2009 recap [25 Nov 2009|10:45pm]

midwest_furfest

[iceleopard]
Where to begin.. where to begin...

Another more than wonderful MFF has come and gone, and by now, judging from all the assorted posts I've been seeing we've all had wayy too much fun.

I want to thank all of my fellow staffers, all 179 or so of you for your support, your time, and just being there to help throw the years biggest furry party! There are just way to many furs to thank for their hard work and determination, but I do want special shout outs to duncandahusky, perro, takaza, It's your attention to detail, commitment to the con, and what it represents that keeps furs coming back, talking about MFF, and most importantly bringing their friends! I think everyone knows how much midwesterners love to party and entertain, and I think we proved that this year! We had a more than tremendous turn out, we raised a very good chunk of money for our charity, and we CONVERTED THEM TO FURS!!

We had some really fantastic programming, probably more than enough to keep furrys busy and out of their hotel rooms for most of the con. many thanks to all of our wonderful panelists, for giving their time and their voice to helping to make MFF one of the best cons ever!

Fursuit programming this year just couldn't of happened without- fursuits! I want to thank everyone who donned 20 lbs or more of fur for the sake of bringing the fandom to life over the weekend, showing off fursuits, and giving fur-tographers something to use their cameras on. I want to thank my partner in fluff, kodi_pup as well of another edition of Fursuit destruction derby, er Fursuit games, and for filling in where I couldn't. Again, tailwraps to all my panelists who shared their time and knowledge to help guide future generations of fursuit builders. Our programming couldn't have happened or been as successful as it was without furs, and fursuiters!

Speaking of, I was just wondering if everyfur had enough to do this year. Was there too much to do, too little? What did you like, dislike, about our fursuit programming? While we want you to have fun, we also want your little furry butts happy and busy :) Any comments critiques, or assorted howls and growls can be submitted directly to me, or posted on the MFF forum.

Let us know how we did!

It seems like every half year or so something bites me in the muse and demands some kind of crazy change. Kirk Tuck talked about it earlier this year when he made a revolution in his photographic process by dropping the high dollar, high name Nikon equipment he'd some to use exclusively and instead opted for a much lighter, less refined Olympus system. It was a jump that left him feeling quite satisfied. Now, I have that urge to make a leap.

A friend recently showed me some random snapshots taken on film. And before you say it... well... yes, I'm back on that "I should be shooting film" kick again. I had an array of older film cameras to use (still have one, in fact) but none of them clicked with me and I think I may have finally understood why. They were old. Plain and simple. Entirely manual focus, not good for moving subject matter, their meters were unreliable, they couldn't keep light sealed... they just weren't built as sturdy as they felt in the hands. I'm lazy. I've been spoiled by modern technology. I want my autofocus. I want my 1005 segment RGB light meter. I want to actually be able to purchase lenses and expand the system.

And thus it clicked.

Well after the digital revolution had already taken place, Nikon was still in the business of 35mm film. In fact, they even released a new film camera (the F6) in 2004 alongside the release of the D2X, the top-of-the-line in digital at the time. It was during this period that digital was just catching up to 35mm in many areas, whereas the F6 and its predecessor the F5 were and are the cream of the crop in 35mm SLR cameras. Just like the pro DSLR's today, they featured lightning fast autofocus motors, 1005 segment RGB matrix metering, 8-10 FPS shutter speeds, the works. They are infallable tools. And the kicker?

The F5 sells for less than $300 today, used and in excellent condition.

A film SLR with all the inner workings of today's latest and greatest in digital for $300 or less. It is perfect. With the confidence granted by metering far superior to my current cameras and autofocus tracking on par with the D300 it would be foolish to not make this step based on insecurity about shooting with film as opposed to digital. I know the unmistakable results possible with Velvia. I want to use it. It is a look impossible to achieve through digital despite the best efforts of many. I know the perfection of Nikon's 1005 segment meter, but have never experienced it as with digital there is a $3000 premium for such perfection. For a tenth of that cost, I could have these tools at my disposal.

It's an opportunity to work with a true artist's medium before film is entirely phased out by simple lack of demand (although the Japanese will surely keep Velvia alive). And this idea sits far better with me than my unsure consideration of picking up more digital rot with a D90. My D40x isn't dead yet, and will still be my "for travel's sake" choice, but for those times when I'm out with an intent to make images, having such fine tools as the F5 and some Velvia 100F is irresistable. And with my current addiction to primes, Nikon doesn't disappoint, with the 50mm f/1.4, 28mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.8 in supply and built specifically for this camera.

$300 for the F5. $300 for the 50mm f/1.4 to start me out. $120 for 20 rolls of Velvia 100F. $720 total. Less than the cost of a D90. And far more refined a toolset.

BUYER BEWARE! MYFURCREATIONS IS A JOKE! [25 Nov 2009|10:10pm]

fursuitauctions

[drag0nfeathers]
[ mood | aggravated ]

Okay, I am posting this because at this point after almost a year of waiting I have come to accept I have been COMPLETELY SCREWED by MyFurCreations!!!

So I am posting this as a service to anyone who may be considering doing business with them. Specifically Exdra, Here is the short version...

My situation goes as follows, I won an auction on furbid for feet paws over a year ago. I got the paws from a gentleman named Tony/Anthony. They were amazing! I loved them so much I commissioned him, on behalf of MyFurCreations for 2 more sets of feet paws along with a two husky tails. Once again, I was thrilled with my order which arrived in about 2 months. Tony came through with flying colors for me! So it was no question who I would place my next order with.

Well, after paying in full for my newest commission back in Feb of 09 I waited and waited, but things started to go a little awry. For some reason or another, Tony was "let go" from MyFurCreations and someone else had taken over my order along with the finished merchandise. After exchanging many emails with Tony I discovered the person who took my order over was a woman named Natalie/Exdra and he gave me her email address so I could finish off the order with her. The merchandise was done, 2 feet paws, 3 tails, and a set of hand paws, but had been confiscated by Exdra.

After telling me a few nasty things about her former employee she also told me my order was finished and would be ready to ship as soon as Tony got my shipping money to her. Well, that took about 3 months, but FINALLY after bouncing emails for weeks I got an email saying my order had shipped. I thought I was patient enough, while thinking she should probably ship my items (being the one who confiscated my merchandise and had acclimated she was the head of the company), and make Tony pay her back, but whatever... I just wanted my order whatever means that made everyone happy. Well, that would have been great if some of my order wasn't missing. (Thinking back now I am lucky to have even gotten anything at all I suppose) After contacting her numerous times she confirmed the missing articles were indeed in her possession and would be shipped out ASAP. Yea, well, that was about another 2 months ago.

Now I get excuse after excuse and lies that they were shipped, but got returned to sender, etc. etc... (which nobody can apparently show me any proof of) NOW it's way too late to claim my money back through Paypal and I am BULLSHIT with the level of customer service and the absurd amount of time for FINISHED & PAID FOR product has been in Exdra's possession and she refuses to ship. I don't even know if she even still has this merchandise and it hasn't been sold on furbid at this point.

I don't know if her rude re pore with me has to do with her and Tony's falling out, but frankly, that has nothing to do with me. I'm still a paying customer and if this is how she treats someone who has paid for the items in FULL almost 10 months ago is going to treat someone over tails and feet paws, then God help anyone who has an expensive fursuit on the line with her!

I'm just really ALL SET with being treated like I DID something wrong and ESPECIALLY after being 10 months over, patient and fully accommodating with the situation at hand and being treated like an inconvenience. Then being blatantly ripped off... yea, it pisses me off.

So be careful who you commission, you would think someone with a "website" or a "company name" might be a little more secure, I guess not!

If anyone else is having a similar experience I'd love to hear about it. I'd feel better about all this if I wasn't the only one caught up in this mess... NOT THAT I WOULD WISH THIS ON ANYONE of course! I'm just curious if she's keeping up with other customers and if I'm being singled out because I was not "her" customer, but her "ex employee's" instead.

Midwest FurFest 2009 Closing Ceremonies Recap [25 Nov 2009|07:23pm]

midwest_furfest

[duncandahusky]
OK, now that we're home, settled, and I'm mostly recuperated, here is a brief recap of this year's Closing Ceremonies. I apologize for the lateness!

Our final attendance for this year was 2,040, including 145 Sponsors and 55 Anniversary Sponsors. We would have had more of both types of sponsors but to be honest we simply underestimated the tremendous outpouring of support and ran out of the gifts that we had prepared for sponsors! If you were turned away, please accept my apologies, and I can assure you that we will attempt to do better next year. The total number of fursuiters in the Fursuit Parade was 357.

Our Art Show has 1,129 pieces entered by 81 artists. The totals from the voice auction and bid sheets were still being tallied at that time, but we were able to say with confidence that total revenues for artists were over $16,000. As is customary at Midwest FurFest, we were able to give artists their checks on the spot! (If you were not at Closing Ceremonies and sold any art, your check will be mailed to you.)

This year, we were so pleased with the generosity shown to our charity, Kane Area Rehabilitation and Education for Animals. Between the approximately $1,800 raised in donations at their table, plus $700 raised by the Charity Poker Tournament (which was won by Jaggers Pawtucket), plus $773 raised by Kage and 2 the Ranting Gryphon in an impromptu benefit performance on Saturday night, and a whopping $4,526 raised at the Charity Auction, $7,799 was raised for KARE. In addition, the board of Midwest Furry Fandom, Inc. (MFF's parent corporation) was pleased to be able to add a donation of $5,000 to this, for a grand total of $12,799!

Following this, your humble narrator failed utterly to retain his composure in announcing that I am stepping down as chairman in accordance with Midwest FurFest's tradition of a two-year term for chairmen. I was pleased to announce that Takaza J. Wolf would be taking over in my stead (I will be swapping positions with him, taking over the role of Hotel Liaison in 2010).

Takaza announced that the theme for Midwest FurFest 2010 will be "Chicago Blues" (Blues music, Blues Brothers...). Our first two Guests of Honor are Amber "Vantid" Hill and Kipper, with more still to come.

And then there was the question of hotels. For that, there was a video:

To recap: We will be at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois. The hotel has 1,100 rooms (no more overflow hotels!) that were renovated last summer, a 24-hour shuttle to and from O'Hare International Airport, and 110,000 square feet of function space, compared to the Westin's 35,000 square feet. We have negotiated free parking in the hotel's 1,000-space parking lot and garage. Rooms are $124 per night and can be booked via the link on our website (www.furfest.org). Suite reservations will be made available sometime in the first quarter of 2010. The Hyatt Regency O'Hare is also home to Anime Central, a 15,000-person anime convention, so MFF is by no means the weirdest thing they'll see all year :-)

We are working on an online survey for everyone to take; hopefully that will be up by the end of the week (family holidays and all - we hope you understand). Watch here or in the MFF Forums for announcements about that.

And now? Now we are going to take a break from convention business, rest up, spend some time with our families and loved ones, and generally relax...before starting all over again in January!

Wow. I have a lot of work this weekend. I didn't think I did, but I do.

I need to:
Do a 20.110 pset by Monday
Study for 5.13 exam on Wednesday!
Write a paper by tomorrow!
Write a grant by Tuesday.
Write another paper by Tuesday.
Do the MISTI Israel Application by Tuesday.
That... might be it? Still not a small amount of work!

Also, I bought pantz from Guess. They were on sale! zomg! I was going to scope out the Galleria for things to buy on Black Friday, buy I didn't really see anything I wanted. Well, aside from the pants I bought that were already on sale. They were originally $120!

Let's see. Oh, I am going to be DJing on WMBR (88.1 FM Cambridge) between 9 and 10 pm this Saturday! It should be awesome!

Community Spotlight:
[info]spacesanta is a now defunct comm that did a Secret Santa exchange of Firefly/Serenity fic in 2005. The fics were posted at [info]spacesantafic as gifts to the various participants, but are viewable to all. So, if you've never checked the comm before, now's a good time to check out some old fic that just might be new to you.

In the meantime, don't forget to sign up for this year's Secret Santa exchange at [info]serenity_santa! Folks have been exchanging fic and graphics there since 2006 and it'd be a shame to see that tradition fall by the wayside. There's a link up top that'll take you direct to their rules for this year.

teenycom

[retr0h]
I'm back! ...With commissions! :D

Offering: 5.50$ commissions.
These commissions are flat colored / linearted pieces. :)

- I take animals only. I'm not comfortable with drawing much of anything else (this includes anthros. D: ).
- I usually take about a week (at the latest!) to get done. It really depends on if I have a lot of homework (but I'm on break for 4 days so I might knock them out in that time frame! :3 )
-Please provide a ref (more than one if you'd like! ) .
-Please check back in the comments, because I tend to reply to them. :D
-I'll ask for payment when I'm halfway done with the commission. BUT I need ONE commissioner that's able to pay right now since I need money for something (xmas presents on ebay! x_x ) so if you would like to pay now, I'd be SO grateful! C:

Yardage Town [25 Nov 2009|04:00pm]

Does anyone shop for fur at Yardage Town?

For those who've never heard of it, you should really check out it there's any locations around you. They literally have an entire wall of high quality fur (as well as stuff that resembled DF's long pile fur) as well as a big table of 1 yard cuts for $8.

The fur itself ranges from $20-$40 a yard.

Just thought I'd throw that out there for those who haven't been to Yardage Town.

Edit: Ok, lol. Sorry. I guess this post really applies to those who live in San Diego. I wasn't aware that was the only place Yardage Town was.

My name is . . . McLovin. [25 Nov 2009|06:52pm]

poisonyoulove
[ mood | good ]

I haven't done this one in a long time.

1. My username is ______ because ______.
My username is poisonyoulove because . . . it's from the song Maine by John Linnell.
It's meant as kind of a joke, as I've always related to the Hawthorne short story Rappaccini's Daughter, in which the girl is poisonous and isolated from the world, and people tend to not love me. ;-P

2. My name is _____ because ______.
My name is Big Damn Laura because . . . Laura is my name. And I like putting Big Damn in front of things, as a Firefly reference. And I am on the big side, and I like mocking myself. XD

3. My journal is titled ____ because ____.
My journal is titled "Were there monkeys?" because it's a particularly amusing quote from Firefly. Also kind of implying the journal is a mess. The kind of mess only a terrifying space monkey could have made. THIS THING IS HELD TOGETHER WITH STRING, PEOPLE!

4. My friends page is called ____ because ____.
My friends page is called "Ni men dou bi zuei!" because I have a twisted sense of humor. Muaahaa haa haa haa ha ha! It's also a quote from Firefly. It's Chinese for "Everybody shut the hell up!"

5. My default userpic is ____ because ____.
At the moment, my default pic is one of my favorite paintings, The Scream by Edvard Munch, edited to offer a holiday greeting. Up until a couple days ago, it was Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks. One of the GREATEST SHOWS IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. My mood theme is also Twin Peaks.

Badge for paper? [25 Nov 2009|03:51pm]

con_badges

[kayla_la]
So I found some scrapbook paper I REALLY REALLY WANT. It's gorgeous! But I need my money for more important things, so... trade!

I'm willing to trade someone a cut out badge for them buying me this paper on amazon. A new one, obviously.

For examples of cut-out badges:

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3037693/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2895271/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3057037/

Basically I ink and colour your character on smooth bristol, then I cut it out and paste it on top of the scrapbook paper. It's hard to tell with scans, but it gives it a really neat effect. They take a while to make and I would probably normally charge 25-30 for them, so trading for the scrapbook paper is a bit of a discount. You would get it shipped to you, as well!

I only need one of these, so first come first serve. If you want it, let me know so I can give you my address. I'll start on your badge once I've received the paper in the mail, and it shouldn't take long once I do, I love doing these!

Fursuits and Touchscreens [25 Nov 2009|02:48pm]

fursuit

[foofers]
Ever tried to work your iPhone/iPod/Droid/Zune/laptop/whatever while in fursuit, only to find that the capacitive touchscreen or trackpad doesn’t work with gloves on? Looks like there could be a straightforward fix for this: sew a little conductive thread through the paw pads!

You can get a short length (10 feet) of conductive thread from SparkFun Electronics for about $7.50 including postage. They sell huge hankin’ spools as well, if pro fursuit makers want to start incorporating this as a feature in their suits.

This might help with certain hotel elevator buttons as well. :)
